I recently got pissed off listening to a song that was only 2:34 seconds long!

Why are songs becoming so short nowadays? Why are artists using “dialogue” for space fillers instead of the melody of the music? Just a few questions that brought me to the real one: Has music become the new get rich quick scheme?

It seems more and more people, with talent or not, have found a way to hop onto a beat and either make a masterpiece or mockery of music.

Yes it’s true that times have changed and the ideals as well as moral structure of our generation are very different from our parents. However, I can’t help but to think, what have we grown to?

Drake said in his song “Doing It Wrong” that “We live in a generation of, not being in love and not being together, but we sure make it feel like we’re together.” Sure we can relate to this, but what does this truly say about us?

Perhaps, it says we have no regard for the foundation of a relationship. And if we have no regard for something as small as that, could it mean the amount of us who actually encompass a passion for anything has grown to be slim to none?

Our generation has truly become a slave to the Almighty dollar.

And for what? For the sake of your name being in lights just so the world can ridicule your every move? No thank you.

It seems to be what most of the hip hop generation converses about: money, cars, and clothes. But you see what is preceding! ;-)

I’m not shunning hip hop artists from being real or even keeping the gritty part of what makes hip hop, hip. I’m saying that character has been lost in the sauce somewhere and that money has become too much of a priority in the industry.

So much so, that following the trend has become more important than being original. Which seems to be why we have so many barbies hailing from BadBitchville. And let’s not forget the plethora of pot smokers reigning from Taylor Gang City!

If that’s who you are, then do you. But if not, please give Nicki Minaj and Wiz Khalifa their aura back.

It’s sad for me to ask numerous rappers and singers why they’re doing their craft and they say, “Man, I’m just tryna get on!” Excuse me?!

Music wasn’t about the dollar back in the day. It couldn’t have been because if that were true, people like MC Hammer and Doug E. Fresh would have never set their foot through the door.

Sure it was nice to have. But back then, music was about the love of the art. Now, even that is undecipherable in the feel of the music.

Let’s get back to music that inspires and lyrics you can feel.

Let’s get back to songs that lasted more than 3 minutes just because the energy was so live you couldn’t stop the record.

Let’s get back to setting the mood instead of setting trends.

Let’s get back to creating new sounds instead of creating beef.

But first, let’s get back to character.

Mixtape: Trumaine Lamar- Things I Should Have Told Her:

*Sigh of relief* Just when you thought R&B was losing all of it’s good sangers to the already highly populated commercial market…lol Trumaine Lamar decided to step on the scene. This mixtape is eclectic in beat choice and soulful in the vocal department which is an “A++”.

His voice is strong yet light which makes it sweet to hear. He sounds like he was raised in the chuch (aka “church” for those that don’t know -_- lol). He also acquaints his listeners with superb use of harmonies and lyrics that are tangible to the heart.

“Things I Should Have Told Her” is a great display of good old fashioned rhythm and blues. How can you resist that? Take a listen. :)
